Channel Project: Reflection

Now having completed and handed in the project, it seems like a good time to reflect on the outcome and my progress as a digital media designer. Overall I think the outcome was great, the videos were well edited and fit the satirical informercial style theme we were going for. The website definitely fits with the design-fi theme, and compliments the videos well. As for improvements to the project, It would’ve been nice to use a voiceover for the videos. We contemplated doing this but time was a big issue (as well as no-one wanting to have their voice recorded). It would’ve been nice to develop the videos a bit further, giving a better idea of what the product actually is/does but again, we ran out of time.

As a whole I feel my team working skills are a bit better, becoming a more versatile team member for in production. I learned the basics of using After Effects which I can build upon in the future and add to my growing repertoire of production skills. Time management is something which can be worked on as we found ourselves rushing at the last minute to get the videos edited together meaning they weren’t as good as they could’ve been (but are still pretty good).

Channel Project: The Videos

The videos to go on the website were going to be adverts to show off the product (Convex) and how it fits in and improved everyday life. Originally we had the idea of showing it from a first person view, demonstrating the visual overlays and how it would look for the user. This idea is similar to how Google Glass promotional videos are. However with doing this, it would involve a lot of post production and learning how to use Adobe After Effects as none of the group members were familiar enough to do something that complex. We finally settled on the idea of informercials, which use satire to show off the product. This would involve using an example where Convex isn’t used, and the user is having a lot of trouble completing a task, this is compared to doing the task with Convex, demonstrating the dramatic improvement use of the product has made.

Before filming anything, potential storyboards were made to get an idea of what was going to be filmed and edited. We came up with more idea than we actually followed through with to give us choice of the best ones which would be most suitable to be made.

Channel Project: Video Intro

This is the intro for the videos that I made using After Effects. The images used were from http://unsplash.com which has lots of hi-resolution, copyright free images. The pictures used are like natural settings to show how Convex fits into everyday life. Overall I like the effect which was achieved with the introduction and feel it fits well into the context of the videos.

Channel Project: The website

We wanted to make the channel website look futuristic to fit in with the design-fi theme set in the brief. We wanted to have extensive use of our logo to make it, and the brand memorable. All the content on the website was to fit just go on one page, and in the end the website had icons for the videos on the left, which make the video and a short description appear on the left. The grid like layout makes it easily expandable for more content and videos in the future. Below is a screenshot of how the website looks. Overall I think it came out well, with the coloured icons being striking and eye catching. The whole design is responsive and works on smaller screens like tablets and smartphones.

Channel Project: The brand

We have been tasked with a group Channel Project which involves creating a brand/identity and then making videos to go on a channel website which tie it all together.

For the brief we came up with the idea of a biological contact lens which augments reality and generally makes the users life better. The first step of the project was to come up with a brand name and a logo for the channel to fit with our idea. Initial thoughts started with words associated with vision and eyes, and after much deliberation we concluded with Convex. We chose convex as a contact lens is convex, but also the word also means pushing forward which is what a futuristic technology company does.

The logo we came up with has a natural, curved look which makes it look more biological rather than digital or electronic. The shape of the logo also connotes the double helix shape of DNA to add to the biological essence of the brand. As for the type, we chose a simplistic font which is clear, easy to read and has nice, natural looking curves which tie in nicely with the logo itself.
